The Shipping Forecast is the best way, in my opinion to learn about the geography of England. Yes. Yes, it is. The soothing timbre of the announcer’s voice will take you to the following places (and more) during the shipping forecast: Viking, Forties, Dogger, Dover and Lundy. Essentially, it is a bulletin for fishermen and sailors. Its purpose is to inform and update those brave sailors, fishermen and others, about the current existing weather conditions…and it is also for those of us who remotely care about British weather- which is pretty much the entire nation. Yup.

Back in 1859, a steam clipper by the name of The Royal Charter sank in a storm off the coast of Anglesey and 450 sadly lost their lives. So, in 1861 the Shipping Forecast was introduced to serve as a warning system of the weather. Not sure what happened in the…
