Hello and hi. It has recently been reported that illustrious Andy Murray will be Team GB flag bearer for the Rio Olympics opening ceremony. Slowclap. What I meant to say was, ‘Congratulations Andy!’ but please know that it was definitely preceeded with a slowclap. Am guessing you know that the slowcap refers to someone clapping slowly and sarcastically. Am not a big fan of our Andy Murray-hence, the slowclap.
Murray was named as Great Britain’s flag bearer on Friday’s opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics this friday- and apparently, he was favoured over boxer Nicola Adams. I would have preferred Adams. That girl is fierce. Plus she is always nice and is usually smiling. She seems more cuddly than Murray-but just know that she listens VERY closely to the wise words of rapper LL Cool J when training/fighting. (LL Cool J sang a song called: ‘Mama said knock you out.). Here she is pictured below.
Murray who won singles gold and mixed doubles silver at London 2012, will lead a British delehgation of approx 55 athletes at the Maracana Stadium (currently still being built) in what will be his THIRD Olympics.
In a statement, Murray said, “I am very proud to be selected as the Team GB flag bearer for the opening ceremony on Friday…to represent your country at the Games is an unbelievable experience, but to lead out Team GB will be an incredible honour, the biggest in sport”. Murray also added, “This is my third Olympic Games and it is a very special competition for me. I obviously have great memories of London and I am 100% focused on winning here in Rio. The privilege of being the flag bearer is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life and will certainly be one of the highlights of my career.” That is very nice. But he totally had someone else write that for him. It happens.
Nicola Adams made history by becoming the FIRST ever women’s Olympic gold medal boxer 4 years ago-and would have been only GB’s 7th female flag bearer since 1906. However, Adams was selected as GB’s flag bearer at the inaugural European Games in Baku last year. So, that is perhaps why she is not flag bearer for Rio. But I would have preferred her to Andy Murray.
Pictured below is our Jessica Ennis-Hill, a British Track and Field athlete who specialises in multi-eventing discliplines. She was a total BOSS at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Anyway, Good luck Team GB!
