Today Jo Cox would have been 42 years old. Here in the UK and around the world, people are celebrating her life, by taking part in various memorial events designed to celebrate the life of MP Jo Cox. The Labour MP and mother of two, was shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire last Thursday, 16 June. Organisers said the events were intended to “show the world we have more in common than which divides us.”
Her family travelled along the river ahead of an event, in a memorial boat to Trafalgar Square. The memorial boat, covered in roses and bearing the name ‘Yorkshire Rose’ was pulled along by a barge carrying her husband- Brendan Cox and their two little ones, Lejla only 3, and Cuillin, just 5 years old. The family started the journey from the London houseboat where Jo had lived with her family. Tributes will also be taking place in New York, Paris, London and in her Batley and Spen constituency. In addition, hundreds are also expected to attend memorial events in Washington DC, Dublin, Brussels, Oslo, Buenos Aires, Auckland and Beirut.
The memorial event in Trafalgar Square today included the following:
- Hosted by journalist Mariella Frostrup-long-term friend of Jo Cox
- Music from Didley Dee-who played at Jo’s wedding
- Honour guard from the women’s movement wearing sashes in the suffragette colours of white, green and purple
- Faith representatives laying 42 white roses
- Various speakers
- Cast of musical Les Miserables to sing one of Jo and husband Brendan’s favourite songs
In addition, a moment of silence was observed at 16:25 BST in London and around the world. Further, a charity album of live music by bands including Coldplay and Muse will be recorded at the Glastonbury Festival this weekend and will be released in her honour. Further, Google added a link to Jo Cox’s memorial fund on their UK homepage to help “honour and remember” the MP.
Parliament was recalled on Monday to remember Jo Cox. Speaker John Bercow, led the tributes said Mrs. Cox had “outstanding qualities…she was caring, eloquent, principled and wise.” Lovely words for a lovely woman who was tragically killed on 16 June 2016.
