The European Migrant Crisis

Greetings. So the European migrant crisis is raging on. Yesterday, a boat in the Mediterranean capsized. I wont include an image of the capsized boat with its frightened people clinging to it- because it is pretty horrible-I think we can all picture a boat capsizing. Instead, above is an image of the Naval Ensign of Italy. Thankfully 562 people were rescued, although 5 sadly drowned. A massive THANK YOU to the Italian Navy who helped rescue the 562 people.

The trawler overturned as a result of people on board rushing to one side after spotting a rescue ship. This meant that people clung desperately to the deck or dropped into the sea. My heart breaks into a thousand little pieces when I read things like that. Italy’s Bettica patrol boat threw life rafts and jackets while another Italian ship sent rescue boats. The same patrol boat rescued a further 108 migrants in another incident later on that day.

Nearly 6K migrants trying to reach Europe illegally have been rescued from flimsy unseaworthy boats in recent days. Yes, recent. Sea-crossing between Libya and Italy is the main route for migrants since an EU deal with Turkey significantly curbed the number of migrants sailing across the Aegean to Greece.

Pictured below is an image of the Italian Navy uniforms and insignia.

Cheers

I’m so thankful that naval and coastguard services can get out quickly enough to rescue people. My heart aches at the thought of the absolute terror and desperation that drives people to undertake such dangerous journeys. It’s a massive humanitarian crisis and I’m dismayed by how the political machine is overriding charity and compassion. It’s just all horribly, terribly tragic.

I share your sentiments. It is on the news every single night. So terribly sad. So many horrible stories of men, women and their children just trying to get a better life for themselves-but with usually with tragic results.

It’s not on the news enough here. I watch BBC news here so it does get some coverage but if I watch American news broadcasting then there’s very little.

Yikes. I guess the US news is dominated by the election and of course, Trump. Like we need news on Trump….

Exactly. It’s like nothing else in the world is happening.

Right? So bad but kind of predictable. Sigh…
