Greetings. I have previously blogged about Slovenia and about to do it again. What’s good Slovenia? This is slang for ‘what’s up?’ Seriously though. What. Is. Up? Slovenia is all over the BBC news today, along with other pressing news. So yeah, Slovenia this is what I heard and I don’t know how to feel about it.
According to the BBC, Slovenia has introduced NEW border restrictions due to the migrant crisis-this is done in an effort to control/close the Balkans route from Greece to Western Europe. I get it. I understand. And for those of you who don’t know, Slovenia recently joined the EU. I don’t think they had planned on closing their borders when they came to the’party’ but I guess they felt it was necessary to do so now. Anyway, it is important to add that Slovenia has said that they will ALLOW migrants who plan to seek asylum in Slovenia or those with clear humanitarian needs. Sheesh. That just might be EVERYONE who enters.
So now it has transpired (as a reaction to Slovenia) that Serbia would close its borders with Macedonia and Bulgaria to those who are not carrying proper/valid documents. This is such a mess. Already the Schengen zone is already in doubt (Schengen=EU’s passport free zone) but NOW 8 EU members, including: Austria, Hungary and Slovakia have tightened their border controls, leaving thousands of migrants stranded in Greece. Total nightmare.
Essentially, Europe is facing the BIGGEST refugee crisis since WWII. According to the BBC, more than a million people entered the EU illegally by boat (most of them Syrians). So, in brief, Slovenia, an EU member has been used as a sort of transit country by migrants as they try to reach Germany and other northern European States. Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar said on Tuesday the Balkan route was now effectively “shutting down”.
I don’t know what the answer is. No one does-not even our illustrious leaders. But I do question if shutting the border is the right thing to do. Anyway, Slovenia-we still cool. What’s good?
Anyway, I think you will find the map below to be very informative.
